Movie Poster

Design a poster to promote a movie. The content for the poster could represent a movie from the past or future.

The poster should include:
Lead typography, headline/title (designed type)
Body text
Lead image, photo illustration or traditional illustration
Define a live area for critical content, the dead area should measure 1/4 inch on all sides- useguides to establish the area

Objectives:
Apply form matches content concept
Select a compositional device
Design for impact: the poster should have enough impact to engage the viewer from a 6-10 foot viewing distance

Greeting Card

Create a four panel greeting card.

The specifications:
Use Picas as a measuring system
Create a one pica gutter on your template which you'll score and fold after the card is completed and printed
Select a humorous theme, a joke or an adage to use as the source of the content.
You have a lot of creative control here, make sure the design is accurate to the content you've selected.
Create a two color iconic logo that identifies you as the card maker, it should be located on the back of the card.

Pitfalls to avoid:
Readability issues for both the card design and logo
Be aware of the gutter and the live area of the card
Sloppy cutting, scoring and folding

What's due:
Comprehensive: April 9 at the end of class
Final: April 23 at the beginning of class

Presentation:
Print the card on card stock
Score or crease the card
Fold it

Visually Illustrated Quotation

Select a favorite quote, song or poem and find a way to express the sentiment typographically.

The use of photography and illustration is required. (be creative)

Size: 10 x 10 inches

Presentation: mounted on black foam board with a two inch margin on all sides.

Due: March 19- Ten solid thumbnails, created in the traditional form and must be approved before you move on to the next step. (traditional sketching is achieved with a pencil and paper) this is for a grade

Cover design (updated 3/3)

Your assignment is to create a cover design for Rolling Stone the magazine.

Choose a cultural theme listed below or suggest one for approval:
School Violence
Gun Control
Poverty
State of Education
State of the Economy

What's required:
A lede photo or illustration as the centerpiece of the cover.  The lede element could be a studio generated or a photo illustration or created as a traditional illustration.

Create and include a lede headline and several other tease elements found on a standard cover.

Include the Rolling Stone masthead.

You should demonstrate a command of typography-

The concept and visual(s) need to be cohesive and feel unified.

The cover should have Impact and Interest and grab the demographic.

Research Rolling Stone covers.
Research the demographic.

Work in the proportional size of the page. The final is actual size.

What's due:
Ten solid thumbnails due Monday, March 3, at 9 am for a grade
Revise next class

Comprehensive due March 10 for a crit. and grade (displayed on screen)

Structural elements and conceptual principles of design

Objective:
Visually demonstrate an understanding of the structural elements and conceptual principles of design.

Assignment: (use the defined picture plane)
Use line, shape and value as elements to construct a design. A sense of weight or balance should be evident as well as a defined compositional model. Utilize a formal (symmetrical) or an informal (asymmetrical) compositional model to achieve the desired look of the arrangement.

Skills Assessment Criteria:
Each category demonstrated is worth 20 points
Use of Line:
Is the line expressive and create movement, does it establish form and value
Shape:
Is the shape organic or geometric, does it help establish the illusion of depth, does the shape advance the composition
Value:
Does the use of value establish separation of elements, is contrast used as a visual device to define form and create spatial illusion
Balance:
Is visual weight established by placement of objects and is there a sense of balance within the composition
Proportion:
Does the proportion or scale of the elements help create an illusion of depth, do the elements relate to one another as a result of proportion, is the use of proportion evident in creating a striking picture

Written statement:
Describe the arrangement of elements, compositional model and thought process used to complete the finished design. (typed) at least 200 words

Sizecreate an 8 x 10 defined picture plane on an 8.5 x 11 inch page
